Begin with the purpose
Gold demand comes from several sources, including investment, central-bank reserves, jewellery and technology. Investors may use it for diversification or as a store of value. Those are different objectives, and they deserve different expectations.
Understand the trade-off
Physical gold does not generate a contractual coupon or business earnings. Its owner relies on price changes for a gross investment return and may face storage, insurance and dealing costs. A gold fund has its own fees and structure.
Diversification is conditional
Gold does not offset every loss in every market. Relationships between assets can change with inflation, real interest rates, currency movements and investor positioning. A useful question is how it behaves alongside the rest of your holdings.
Think beyond the headline
Before evaluating a gold position, write down the purpose, the time horizon and how you would reassess it. That makes a sudden price move easier to interpret without treating every fluctuation as a new investment thesis.
